Theorganizational structure usually defines the way tasks are divided,grouped, as well as coordinated in a firm. Each organization is knownto have a structure that clarifies the roles that every memberperforms in order for individuals to understand their duties to thegroup. The formal structure of any organization always provides twovital roles for the members. The first one includes the clarificationof the functions of each organizational member to know what he issupposed to do and who to report to. The other one is the amount ofcontrol the organizational member has with regard to his job in thecompany. Most organizational structures are designed with the aim ofsimplifying the decision-making process. Therefore, this paper willoffer a discussion on the structure of Cleveland Clinic and itsimpact on planning and decision-making.

ClevelandClinic, which is a multi-specialty educational, medical center, wasestablished in the year 1921 with a vision to provide outstandingpatient care. The mission of Cleveland Clinic since its inception hasremained to provide better care to the sick, investigate theirproblems, as well as further education of those they serve (ClevelandClinic, 2016). The organizational structure of Cleveland Clinic canbest be described as ad hoc. The structure works on an ad hoc basisand complexity, bureaucracy, as well as centralization are regardedas limiting. Therefore, the organization typically brings in theexperts from different areas to constitute the creative, functionalteam. The decision-making in this organization is decentralized. Thestructure of Cleveland Clinic is a group practice model. It comprisesof the board of directors, who are the primary governing body of theclinic. These canbe employed in a different department with the ones requiring strictadherence to the rules adapting to the line organizational structure.

Giventhat the process of decision-making is decentralized in thisorganization arriving at conclusions takes a short period.Decentralized decision-making involves delegating authority to thelower levels of the organization. Under decentralization, themid-level managers have the authority to make decisions (Marquis &ampHuston, 2015). Within the clinic, the board of governors thatconstitutes the primary physicians overseeing surgical and medicalactivity makes decisions based on the patient cases they encounter.Decentralization makes the process of making decisions faster andsaves on time with regard to urgent matters.

Formaland informal leadership equally influences decision making within thedepartment or organization. For instance, the board of trustees atthe Cleveland Clinic can be regarded as an informal leadership withinthe organization. They influence the decision-making process byoffering advice to the board of directors about critical managementas well as medical concerns. This indicates the health advantages ofadvice services (Allmark et al., 2013). The nurses considered asinformal leaders can also be developed and allowed to better theperformance of the organization by providing efficient and qualitycare. Nursing requires dedicated as well as committed leaders toaddress the many challenges within the healthcare setting andconsidering the role of informal leaders offers a way to tackle theseproblems (Downey, Parslow, &amp Smart, 2011).

Inconclusion, this paper offered a discussion on the structure ofCleveland Clinic and its impact on planning and decision-making. Thepaper determined that the organizational structure influenceddecision making by outlining the roles and authority of members. Thediscussion determined that the organizational structure simplifiedthe decision-making process. It was also established that informalnurses are integral in improving care at the health facility.
